Flooring Built for Detonator and Electrically-Initiated Devices
Igniters, squibs, and electric matches all share one thing: they are initiated by a controlled electrical signal. That means they are also vulnerable to uncontrolled electrical events — a static discharge of the wrong magnitude at the wrong time will initiate them just as effectively as the intended signal. The floor under their production has to drain static before it reaches them.
PumaCRETE® specifies igniter, squib, and electric match facility floors toward the Class 0 end of the conductive range, with grounding grids tighter than general initiator work and documentation suitable for MIL-STD-1512 compliance.
This page sits under Initiators & Detonators.
Standards & Compliance Framework
Electrically-initiated device production is governed by the EED military standards family plus the broader DoD AA&E framework.
MIL-STD-1512
Electroexplosive Subsystems. The core EED design and handling standard.
MIL-STD-331
Fuze and Fuze Components Tests. Qualification test requirements for igniters.
DoD 4145.26-M
Contractors’ Safety Manual. Primary flooring requirement.
ANSI/ESD S20.20
ESD Control Program. Baseline for Class 0 device handling.
SAE AS9100
Aerospace Quality Management. Governs aerospace squib production.
ATF 27 CFR Part 555
Commerce in Explosives. Commercial electric match licensing.
Technical Requirements Igniter Flooring
Igniter and squib production requires Class 0 handling practices because the devices are engineered to initiate from very low electrical signals.

No-fire sensitivity
Modern EED designs specify a no-fire current and a no-fire static voltage threshold that the device must survive without initiating. Facility flooring is one of the primary controls that keeps devices below the no-fir threshhold during handling.
The PumaCRETE® System Families
Three product families cover the full DoD and explosives pillar. Each sub-industry page specifies the system most often used for that application; the three families below are the common foundation.

Why Igniters Need Class 0 Floor Tuning
ESD-dissipative floors (106–109 ohms) protect electronic components. Conductive floors (25,000–106 ohms) protect propellants, primers, initiators, and the personnel handling them. The two are not interchangeable, and the conductive range is what every DoD, NFPA, and ATF framework in this pillar converges on.
Dissipative
106–109 ohms. Protects electronics. Not sufficient for explosives work.
Conductive
25,000–106 ohms. Protects personnel, product, and facility. Required for all DoD and explosives work.
Installation, Grounding & Field Testing
Delivering the specified resistance envelope is a system problem — floor material, substrate preparation, grounding network, and verification testing all have to work together. PumaCRETE installs through a nationwide network of factory-trained crews.
Surface Preparation
Concrete is diamond-ground or shot-blasted to CSP 3–4. Cracks and spalled joints are repaired. Moisture-vapor transmission is tested per ASTM F1869 and F2170.
Grounding Network
Conductive grounding strips are embedded at columns or designated ground points every 1,500 square feet, bonded to the building's earth ground. For sensitivity-critical areas we specify a tighter 1,000-sq-ft grid.
Compliance Verification
- ▸Resistance to Ground — tested per ANSI/ESD STM7.1 using a 100V megohmmeter on a grid pattern.
- ▸Point-to-Point Resistance — verified between randomly selected locations.
- ▸Documentation — full test report for the facility safety file and DoD / ATF / OSHA audit record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Initiators & EEDs FAQ's
All three are electrically-initiated devices, but the use cases differ. Igniters start propellant combustion in rocket motors and solid-fuel systems. Squibs are small pyrotechnic devices used in aerospace and automotive safety systems (airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, stage separation). Electric matches are low-cost commercial ignition devices used in display pyrotechnics. All three require conductive flooring tuned toward Class 0.
Yes. The 200 Series conductive epoxy, tuned to the Class 0 envelope and verified by ANSI/ESD STM7.1 resistance mapping and STM97.2 body-voltage generation testing, meets the resistance-control requirements referenced in MIL-STD-1512 for electroexplosive subsystem environments.
The no-fire threshold is the maximum electrical stimulus (current and voltage) that an EED must survive without initiating. MIL-STD-1512 specifies no-fire test requirements for military EEDs. Facility floors are specified to keep ambient static below the device no-fire level during handling.
Yes. Automotive airbag squib production under SAE AS9100 and related industry standards is a core PumaCRETE customer segment. The flooring envelope matches aerospace squib production.
Yes. PumaCRETE conductive systems are chemically resistant to the pyrotechnic composition families typical of igniter, squib, and electric match production — including magnesium, aluminum, perchlorate, nitrate, and binder-solvent chemistries.
Conductive grounding strips are embedded at designated ground points every 1,000 square feet instead of the standard 1,500, bonded to the building earth ground. The denser grid provides shorter discharge paths for sensitivity-critical operations.
Yes. Commercial electric match manufacturers operating under ATF Part 555 and NFPA 1124 are a PumaCRETE customer segment. The system specification follows the same Class 0 tuning used for military igniter production.
